tui is an expression coined by Bertolt Brecht to denote a ‘Tellect-Ual-In’. The typical tui is an ‘intellectual’  – often a generous description – who prizes cleverness, originality, difference, obscurity and complexity over honesty, truth, simplicity and clarity.  For Brecht, the theorists of the ‘Frankfurt School’ – Adorno, Horkheimer and co – were examples of tuis.  ‘Postmodernism’ is tui-ism par excellence. The typical tui-Marxist usually emphasizes flaws in Marx, prefers the ambiguities of Gramsci’s personal notebooks – forced upon him by the conditions of fascist imprisonment – to the directness of Lenin.
